I have to say that this Debut Novel from this author really blew my mind. I opened the book, not sure what to expect and have to say I read it in almost one sitting. Reading those last words, my thoughts:How long till the next book?My heart was heavy but certainly happy and curious , and my mind going one hundred miles an hour trying to work out which direction this author may take us in the next instalment.I have personally not read many books on Phoenix's and this one is truly a unique story. It captivated me till I had turned the last page, and had me grasping at my pages at many suspenseful and emotional turns.I was starry eyed with Eli - a kiss like that - he certainly made me swoon. His whole persona - what can I say - I have found yet another book boyfriend to pine over. (Sigh) lolI enjoyed his power, yet his caring attitude, his love, and his overall character.Julie Mason was a strong character; I had a heavy heart at times for her, coping with things in life not every teenager experiences. But, then she meets Eli, and gains a new best friend as well as love. Her character was shown with definition and depth and even in her darkest moments she didn't think of herself but who she may have to leave behind or possibly never see again. The romance between Eli and Julie was sweet, endearing and most definitely romantic. I got a little choked up at times. But also had butterflies.Tthe relationship was paced at a gradual pace, no rushing into it and certainly working up the reader to want to find out more.I have to say those last few chapters had me worried, and very sad... and I was certainly torn towards Lucy's character, I really didn't like her through most of the book but that certainly changed. Her character was well put forth. All evil is this book, was most certainly that, and for the Nephilim to gain immortality many suffered at their hands...Many twists and turns are woven throughout this story and you certainly won't see them coming, moments where you will be teary eyed, your heart racing and mouth agape and possibly some ahhhh moments. The myth that Bette has written in her story is one of a kind. A fiery rebirth every 300 years, a mother chosen to guide the Phoenix and the also the danger of having green eyes and fiery red hair.Nephilim who are hot yet seriously dangerous, and a calling for some and end for others. But that certainly is not all.!!The authors writing is crisp and well written and certainly engages the reader at every page turn.Phoenix - The Rising is a thrilling, intense, rollercoaster ride that is romantic, suspenseful - yet emotionally touching. The characters breathe a life within the pages and the world that Bette has crafted is so well envisaged and written , I felt like I was right there inside the book right till I had read that last word. This book was suppiled to me via the author but in no way does this reflect my honest opinion or thoughts. Thank you to the author for this review copy.

This book was impossible to put down. It's well written, imaginative, and full of twists and turns! The way the author tied together biblical and Paiute legend is wonderful. If you like romance, mystery, supernatural elements and constant page-turning, you'll love this book!

What does blonde Julie Mason have to fear? Nothing. She lives a normal life even with a troubled past. When she meets Eli, she feels more than she should. Before her life can really start, a series of murders take place. They are seemingly random. However, she learns that there is a reason behind these deaths. With the secret revealed, Julie decides to risk her life to help keep the secret. She doesn't care if they target her. In fact, she welcomes it. With a lot at stake and so many variables in play, will she succeed in protecting the people she cares about most? Or will her games end with deadly consequences. The ultimately betrayal is at play here. Can Julie or Eli stop the plans that have been set in motion or are they doomed? Love and family...betrayal and trust are all key.Ms. Maybee has created wonderful characters and an unique plot. I loved Eli. He was truly remarkable and completely captivating. The thought and feelings behind his actions are inspiring. Ms. Maybee keeps you coming back for more. There are some definite twists that will not allow you to put the book down.Love can be dangerous. It can burn the very thing you love!

I LOVED this fiery gem of a YA title by Bette Maybee, who is an author with talent to spare. Phoenix is well-written, rich with description and gritty humor, written by someone who obviously is familiar with teenagers in a very realistic way. The story is well-paced and plotted, and Maybee shows her impressive chops from the first chapter, which moves between two characters (one dead!) with an easy grace. Eli and Julie are complex enough for an adult reader to empathize with, and yet young enough that teens will love their steamy romance and sexy scenes. The lore behind the Nephilim is interesting and complex, but the real "fire" of this novel is in the characters, dialog and plot. This is a great debut novel for Maybee, and I see her having a rising all her own in the future. This novel is a must for fans of YA paranormal, ancient legends, or books that showcase the power of all-encompassing young love.

Debut novel - really? Wow, where have you been hiding your talent Ms Maybee. I loved this novel. After going through quite a few DNF's this was quite a surprise. I can even say that I am content with the ending, if you do decide not to write a follow-up that is, but having said that, I would be most appreciative if you could give me a little more. Congrats to you on an excellent debut novel and for me an unexpectedly good read from the get go.

I could NOT put this book down! It was filled with suspense, romance, and believable characters with complex emotions. The way everything came together at the end was so smart. It left you satisfied, but wanting more. Cannot wait for the next book in the series!!!

LOVED the mythology surrounding this one. Haven't really ever thought about the Phoenix as a human-like being, and the legends with the Paiute and N...darn, can't remember the other name, well, they were well fleshed out. That being said, there was just something missing from this one. I really only enjoyed Julie and Eli as characters...which since they are the main ones, that's what's most important. But it felt like there wasn't a lot of depth to any of the secondary characters. They all seemed quite horrible to me, but then occasionally they would show some remorse or humanity, but I just didn't buy the change. There wasn't enough to make me feel like they were 3 dimensional characters. I'm talking Lucy, Charsey, even occasionally Julie's father (not that he was evil, but he just wasn't there until suddenly he was). It just felt that more shadings of gray could have been added to each character to make their transitions more believable. Quite honestly there were a few unbelievable emotions in the story too. So much insta-love (which I finally bought into with Eli and Julie b/c it was supposed to be magical I think), but Lucy's "love" for Eli just came out of nowhere...they barely interacted before she was in love. And Charsey was Julie's BFF?? Uhhhh....again, I eventually justified it to myself with Julie not having many friends, but just didn't work for me. There wasn't enough to show me why Julie liked her in the first place other than Charsey paying her attention. *sigh* This is coming off so nit-picky, but it's just that I saw so much potential in this story, and I think it could be fleshed out to be even better. On a weird totally nit-picky side note, I don't get the Julie smoking was only in the first part of the book and then not addressed at all. It was almost like she only smoked to make a great first contact scene with Eli, and it really didn't fit her character.OK, back to the good -- Julie and Eli together...*sigh* They really had some great chemistry, and their love was so sweet and perfect. So many heartbreaking moments between the 2 of them, lots of great emotion in those parts. Would have LOVED to have an epilogue to this book, b/c it felt so quick at the end and a little extra glimpse into that future would have been great....

We received a copy of this from the author, to give an honest review. The book starts off great. We meet Julie. She is blonde and is super smart. Gotta be if you're in AP classes. Not sure I really like her BFF Charsey. There are a whole bunch of different characters that are introduced throughout. There's Eli and he's holding a major secret. You learn about the Phoenix. Which in local myth is called a Fire Child and the Nephilim are on a hunt. So a lot of people start to go missing. There's plenty of action, mystery and love throughout the story. This book was enjoyable. The only thing that I really didn't like, is how it went to different characters. At times I was a little confused....Lissa http://www.boundlessbookreviews.com

I feel robbed. I really disliked Lucy and was hoping Eli would kill her when he found out all the awful things she had done and then Julie could have been his protector. What a bunch of crap. She suddenly sees the light and now she is good? Robbed.
